in book two nearly headless nick celebrates his 5ooth deathday. he aslo said that he died in 1492. add those two together and that dates the book to 1992. Harry was twelve then. subtract twelve from 1992 and that means that harry was born on 1980.
which technically makes him 22

Actually he doesn't have to be 22. In the 5th book he'll be 15! The 5th book does not have to take place in the year that it comes out! If the 5th book took place in 1995 and Harry was born in 1980, that would just mean that the 5th book took place in 1995.

I think they should give a year in the book. It would make everything easier.

ok, i just found this out. it's a bit of a mix up in time. if COS took place in 92 than how could dudley have a playstaion? it didn't come out till like 94.
anyway that's what i read at the harry potter lexicon.

You're right. But think of it this way, Not everything has to make sense.

But another reason that makes it not make sense, is that in book 1 the Dursley's car was made in 1998. Notes We Have:
1. Harry was born in 1980 2. He is supposed to be 11 in his first year 3. Dursley's car was made in 1998 4. Plystation comes out in 1994, but Dudley has one in the second book.
So the conclusion is: Well there are two conlusions. 1. E-Mail, Send a letter, or someone talk to JK Rowling. 2. This makes no sense!
